6-Day Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes

Embark on a 6-day tour from Marrakech to Fes through the enchanting Moroccan Sahara desert. Over the course of 6 days and 5 nights, you will visit a variety of stunning locations. Your journey begins with the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, followed by the Ait-Ben-Haddou Kasbah and the city of Ouarzazate. You’ll also explore the Amridil Kasbah, the Dades Valley, and the Todra Gorges.

In the Merzouga Sahara desert, you’ll ride camels, witness magical sunsets and sunrises, and spend a night in a desert camp. Additionally, you’ll explore the Sahara desert of Merzouga in a 4×4 car, visit the traditional market in Rissani, and discover Erfoud, the town known for its fossils.

Itinerary

The 6-day Morocco desert tour begins with an early pick-up from the airport or your accommodation in Marrakech. We will drive through the stunning High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, with stops along the way for panoramic views of the breathtaking landscapes. Our first major stop will be the Telouat Kasbah. Next, we will visit the renowned Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the backdrop for many famous movies such as Gladiator, Alexander, and The Mummy, as well as TV series like Game of Thrones. We then continue to Ouarzazate, known as "The Gateway to the Desert." Dinner and an overnight stay will be provided in a hotel.

After breakfast, we will visit the Atlas Studios, renowned for hosting the filming of numerous famous movies, followed by a tour of the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate. We then head southeast to visit the Amridil Kasbah, surrounded by picturesque palm groves in Skoura. Continuing our journey, we will explore the Rose Valley, where an annual Rose Festival showcases local rose products such as perfumes, rose water, oil, and cosmetics. Next, we drive through the Dades Valley, pausing at a scenic overlook to marvel at the stunning landscape of the Dades Gorges. Our adventure continues to the Todra Gorges, where the Todra River has carved a majestic canyon through the mountains, featuring high red cliff walls. Enjoy some free time for lunch and wander through the gorges, soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. In the afternoon, we arrive at the Sahara desert of Merzouga, where you will embark on a camel ride across the sandy dunes. Pause to witness the magical sunset atop a high dune before continuing to our luxurious desert camp. Here, you can enjoy Berber drum music, dance around the campfire under the vast open sky adorned with stars, and indulge in a delicious dinner. Spend the night in the comfort of the camp.

Wake up early to witness the captivating sunrise in the heart of the desert. After enjoying some free time for breakfast, you will return to Merzouga on camelback, where your driver awaits. Today is dedicated to exploring the diverse region of Merzouga, which boasts a multitude of incredible sights, including sand dunes, a wild lake, mining areas, fossil sites, and lush oases, perfect for various outdoor activities. Our exploration of Merzouga begins with an off-road drive to visit an ancient eyeliner mine, offering insights into the area's rich history. We then visit a nomadic community in their traditional woven tents, where you can learn about their way of life while enjoying a refreshing Berber tea. Next, we head to the village of Khamlia, renowned for its vibrant Gnaoua music and captivating dance performances. The inhabitants of Khamlia hail from sub-Saharan countries such as Mali, Sudan, and Niger. Afterward, you'll have free time for lunch at a local restaurant. Following lunch, we'll take a leisurely stroll through a picturesque palm grove, immersing ourselves in the tranquility of nature. Our journey continues a few kilometers away to the wild Merzouga Lake, also known as Flamingos Lake, where you can observe the rich birdlife and scenic beauty of the area. In the evening, dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided in a hotel, allowing you to relax and unwind after a day of exploration and discovery in Merzouga.

After breakfast, we depart from the desert to visit Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet, which remains a major trading center in the region, bustling with a large souk on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. After exploring the lively Rissani souk, we continue our journey to Erfoud, where we will visit one of the workshops specializing in fossilized marble. Next, we drive along the picturesque Ziz River, pausing for a panoramic view of the Ziz Valley. Enjoy some free time for lunch in Midelt. Our journey continues to the cedar forest, home to the Barbary Macaques. You're welcome to feed them as you wander through the forest. Following our visit to the cedar forest, we'll explore Ifrane, renowned for its low temperatures, snowfall, and charming alpine-style houses, earning it the nickname "the Switzerland of Morocco." Finally, we will drop you off at your accommodation in Fes, concluding your unforgettable journey through Morocco's diverse landscapes and cultural heritage.

After breakfast, we will pick you up from your accommodation in Fes to embark on an enriching exploration of this historic city, renowned as one of Morocco's imperial cities and a vibrant hub of culture and religion. Our day begins with a visit to the Royal Palace gate, offering a glimpse into Morocco's regal history. We then delve into the heart of the city with a guided tour of the well-preserved medieval Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our journey through the Medina starts at the iconic Blue Gate, known as Bab Boujloud, which marks the entrance to the old city. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, we will explore notable landmarks such as the Medrasa Bouanania, the Najjarine Fountain, the Tanneries, and the Quaraouin Mosque and University, which holds the distinction of being the oldest university in the world. After immersing ourselves in the Medina's rich history and cultural heritage, we will venture to the Jewish quarter known as "the Mellah." From there, we will drive to an ancient fortress, offering panoramic views of the bustling Medina and the city of Fes. As our guided tour comes to an end, we will return you to your riad, leaving you with lasting memories of Fes's captivating landmarks and vibrant atmosphere.
